No need to apologize, that date is still well before the Colonel sold the US franchise. The fact that you let everybody know the corrected date is commendable IMO. When I had talked to Rodney on the phone I had asked him what do you think of the latest? He said, oh the flavor is there, maybe just ratios need some working, but the flavor is there, you guys are there.

I'm hugely sorry my friends because I've made a terrible mistake.
On Wednesday, my Granddaughter asked me if I had any photos of me when I was a child.
I told her I did, but I hadn't looked at them in years and I wasn't quite sure where I had put them.
I knew they were in a couple of old shoeboxes, rather than in photo albums where I never found the time to put them, but I finally found them.
She and I spent most of Thursday evening looking at the photos, almost all of which were black & white.
There were pictures of my Mom & Dad, my brothers, my grandparents, my aunts & uncles & cousins, my friends & schoolmates, my neighbors and lots of photos of various events and vacations.
Whew! They sure brought back a flood of memories.
When I came across a group of pictures which were taken the same year my parents took my brother and I for our first taste of KFC chicken, I was shocked and dismayed to see the date on the back of them was August 1960.
So my friends, I sincerely apologize for saying my first KFC experience was 1955. It was not. It was 5 years later.
I hope this doesn't taint your trust in my memory of the exquisite and truly unique flavor of Original Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken.
As I said previously, that glorious experience didn't just affect my tastebuds. It is indelibly etched into my entire being and that is why I am proud to be a participant in our mutual quest.
I may have gotten the year wrong, but I will NEVER forget the taste of O.R. KFC.
And when we find it, I will know it. And I will tell you, with no uncertainty, that we have.
Again, please accept my apology for this inadvertent misrepresentation. |
Lumpy, your honesty here is commendable indeed my friend. It's not like you HAD to tell anyone this, but the fact you have proves yet again that you're a sincere player
As Dusty has written above, 1960 is still 4 years before Colonel Sanders sold out to Brown and Co., so the chicken and gravy you ate that day had his PERSONAL stamp of approval on it. Indeed - without any shred of doubt! - the chicken you ate that day might as well have been cooked by C.S himself! Because no one was as staunch as he in making sure that every last one of his franchisees followed his way, in both the prepping and the cooking of their fried chicken product
Thank you Lumpy, for the fascinating story of this wonderful day out with your family at an authentic "Kentucky Fried Chicken". I know that every one here who has read it, appreciates it very much.
How about showing us the photos! I mean, if you like, I could put them up on the forum with your story... we'd all love to see that! PM me if you agree mate.
Regards,

TC, the photos were not of us at KFC (actually Scott's Chicken Villa which had the Canadian KFC franchise), but rather of my Mom & Dad and older brother and I in front of the new house which we had just moved into.
Since my parents had ordered all new appliances and none of them were going to arrive until the following week, we all had the pleasure of dining out over the weekend.
The first dinner we had that weekend was KFC and I am forever happy about that. I got hooked instantly. It wasn't just the glorious flavor of the chicken, it was the whole experience.
Buttermilk biscuits with honey, mashed potatoes with gravy, coleslaw; all served on tables covered in red & white Callico table cloths. It took them less than a year to figure out the table cloths had to go. The cleaning costs had to be huge.
But the quality and quantity of the food stayed the same for many years.
Remember, CS only initially sold the rights to KFC in the US, so in Canada, we still enjoyed the Original Recipe for quite some time after it was diluted in the States.
But inevitably, Scott's Hospitality, as it had become, and Colonel Sanders succumbed to the big bucks from Pepsico and that was the last time any Canadian tasted the O.R.
Oh boy, here I am rambling. Sorry about that.
TC, if you want to see my 1960 family pics, I suppose I could scan some of them and post them here, but unfortunately, none of them are in front of a KFC sign, so I think they'd just be boring to y'all.
Let me know.

Thanks Lump. Scotts Chicken Villa. Wonder who was a Chicken Chef at one of those?
You beat me by three years! I was 8 in 1963, about to move back from Florida to N.J. for the first time, I did it again in 1978.........
We had it as a stop for lunch in 63. My Father bought and later sold a Moving Truck. He was a truck driver anyway, so why rent? He could always use it as a side job. That was his thinking...........
Anyway, I remember the Colonel's chicken as we left Fla. My Georgia relatives made good Fried Chicken, and Great Chicken and Dumplin's, but the Colonels Chicken! That's why I wanted as bad as a H.S. Sophomore to work at Gino's and make that Chicken. I loved being in the back, making the Chicken. No front register and customer stuff for me..........
Thanks for the story. Made me revisit my past........

Thanks to The Colonel, here's a pic of what a KFC place looked like in Canada in the good old days.
